The Delta Rhine Corridor East project, a joint initiative of Gasunie and the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy (EZK), has taken the next step. From March 27 through May 7, the public had the opportunity to comment on the initial plans for the Delta Rhine Corridor East (DRC East). A total of 27 comments were received. Each comment has been addressed in the response memorandum. This response memorandum has now been published.

The DRC East at a Glance

The DRC East project involves the construction of a single underground pipeline, including technical installations. This pipeline will be used to transport CO2 from the German border near Venlo to Boxtel. The Delta Rhine Corridor (DRC) East also runs through our municipality. On the website from Energy Transition(external link) You can see the approximate route of the pipeline.

What were the comments about?

The construction of a pipeline can have consequences for people, businesses, agriculture, and nature. Many of the comments therefore focused on the route, safety, nature, and the landscape, as well as how local residents and other stakeholders are being involved in the decision-making process. You can find all comments and responses in the response document on the website mentioned above.

Follow-up steps

The comments received will be used in the next phase of the project: drafting the draft Scope and Level of Detail Memorandum (draft NRD). This study plan specifies which environmental impacts will be assessed and how that assessment will be conducted. The results will be documented in an environmental impact report (EIR), which will be used in further decision-making regarding the project.

A public engagement plan was also published. The responses to that plan will be used to improve the public engagement plan. The draft NRD and the revised public engagement plan are expected in the second quarter of 2027.

The DRC East is part of the transformation of our energy system

The Netherlands is transitioning to a more sustainable energy system, with lower CO₂ emissions and less dependence on fossil fuels. The DRC East contributes to this effort with an underground CO₂ pipeline between Boxtel and Venlo. This pipeline makes it possible to transport captured CO₂, preventing it from being released into the atmosphere.

Before the pipeline can be constructed, we are assessing, among other things, the environmental and safety impacts. Local residents and other stakeholders also have the opportunity to provide feedback on the plans. The feedback received will be taken into account as the project is further developed, leading up to a decision on the exact route.
