Fireworks

Starting August 1, 2026, a nationwide ban on consumer fireworks will take effect in the Netherlands. Clubs and foundations may apply for an exemption, subject to certain conditions, to set off F2 fireworks during New Year’s Eve.

This means that, as a private citizen, you may no longer purchase, possess, or set off consumer fireworks such as cake fireworks, compound boxes, rockets, and firecrackers. This applies even on New Year’s Eve. Associations and foundations affiliated with Gemert-Bakel and registered with the Chamber of Commerce may apply to the municipality for an exemption.

Together, we’ll make sure that New Year’s Eve in Gemert-Bakel is safe and enjoyable.

Who can apply for an exemption?

The exemption is intended for associations and foundations that organize small-scale, organized fireworks activities that contribute to a safe and festive New Year’s celebration.

Nothing will change for businesses. Businesses must apply for a permit the Province of North Brabant(external link) to set off fireworks.

How do you apply for an exemption?

An association or foundation must submit an application to the municipality. This can be done by providing the following information:

  • Purpose and structure of the activity
  • Insurance Policy (the organization must purchase insurance)
  • Expected number of visitors
  • Safety Plan, including a site plan
  • Exact location that meets the specified safety requirements
  • Amount of fireworks (max. 200 kg of F2 fireworks)
  • Contact information for two supervisors, each at least 18 years of age, who will be present during the fireworks display and have reviewed the informational package provided by the national government
  • Contact information for up to eight fireworks operators who are at least 18 years old, who will set off the fireworks, and who have reviewed the informational materials provided by the national government.

What are residents allowed to set off?

As a resident, you may only set off Category F1 fireworks. This is permitted year-round. Examples include:

  • Sparklers
  • Firecrackers
  • Firecrackers
  • Small decorative fountains that fall under category F1.

Always check the packaging. It must clearly state that the fireworks are Category F1 and that they are suitable for private use.

Which fireworks are prohibited?

As a consumer, you are no longer allowed to purchase, possess, or set off fireworks in categories F2, F3, and F4. These include, for example, rockets, firework cakes, compound boxes, and firecrackers.

Have any fireworks left over?

Do you still have any fireworks that are banned under the new rules? Do not set them off, and do not throw them away with regular trash. The national government is organizing nationwide drop-off days. Check the Website: leverjevuurwerkin.nl(external link) Find out when and where these days are. You can turn in fireworks there safely, for free, anonymously, and without a fine.
