Flooding
Sometimes a lot of rain falls in a short period of time. The sewers, but also ditches and ponds, are not always able to properly process this heavy precipitation. The municipality of Gemert-Bakel and water board Aa and Maas make efforts to limit water nuisance, but you too can contribute.
Flooding - Who do I call?

Report flooding?
To get a good understanding of where the problems occur, the municipality would like to hear when you experience water nuisance. Do you have water nuisance? Please fill out the flood survey(external link). In it you can clearly indicate where the problem is, so that we can get a good picture of the nuisance in our municipality and take appropriate measures.
If you have a problem that needs immediate attention please call the municipality.
Climate Change
Among other things, climate change increases the likelihood of extreme rainfall. Water will then stay on the streets more often. We have to learn to deal with that. Compare it to other extreme weather conditions such as snow, ice and storms. We find water in the streets acceptable, as long as we can work with you to prevent rainwater from entering your home.
What is the municipality doing to prevent flooding?
The municipality tries to determine where measures are needed to prevent flooding in the future. When we replace sewers, we often lay an additional stormwater pipe. Also when we redesign a street, we try to make it sloping - where possible. That way the water flows in the right direction.
In addition, the municipality is zoning several areas for water storage. These are developments that take a long time. An example of this is the water storage on the Burgemeester Diepstratenlaan in Bakel.
Addressing bottlenecks
When water nuisance occurs, we like to look for a solution together with you. Sometimes we advise residents to take measures themselves(external link). Other times, the options for adaptation lie with us. Depending on the type of measures, this may take some time. For example, if we are redesigning a street or neighborhood.
Tile out, grass in!
As a resident, you can do something yourself to limit rainwater nuisance. By choosing (artificial) grass or plants you make room for rainwater in your garden(external link) and rainwater can infiltrate better into the soil. You can also reuse rainwater by, for example, connecting the roof downspout to a rain barrel. In times of drought, you can use the rainwater to water the plants.
From the municipality, we have 2 incentive schemes for disconnecting your stormwater:
Scheme incentive contribution construction green roof | Municipality of Gemert-Bakel
Scheme incentive contribution disconnection of rainwater | Municipality of Gemert-Bakel
