Have a small facade garden installed

Don’t have a front yard, but would you like one? The municipality will install a small front-facade garden for you—free of charge! Some homes are directly adjacent to the (paved) sidewalk, which means there’s little greenery on the street. A small front-facade garden is a narrow strip of greenery along the front or side facade of a home. Because the strip is located in a public space, the municipality will handle the installation. You’ll then be responsible for planting and maintaining it yourself.

Why does the municipality encourage the creation of a small facade garden?

Building a facade garden offers many benefits:

  • The living environment is becoming greener and healthier
  • Brightens up both your home and the street
  • Rainwater drains away more effectively
  • Plants and flowers attract all kinds of insects and birds
  • It retains less heat than tiles or concrete

Game Rules

The municipality will assess whether the public space is suitable for a small facade garden. The small facade garden will be no more than 60 cm (two tiles) wide.

  • The municipality will remove the paving, improve the soil, and install edging around the small facade garden.
  • The facade garden is a community garden and remains a public space (owned by the municipality).
  • Residents are responsible for planting and maintaining the facade garden themselves. The facade garden is intended exclusively for greenery and plants. It is not permitted to place objects or other items in the facade garden that are not part of the plantings.
  • Various cables and pipes may be located in the ground. Dig only manually and no deeper than 30 cm.
  • If the municipality needs the land to carry out works, passage will have to be granted, with no right to compensation.
  • In case of neglect or non-compliance, we restore the sidewalk to its original condition.
  • If your street has recently been redesigned (new paving, landscaping, or sewer installation), a five-year digging ban is in effect. This means you cannot have a small front-yard garden installed during that period. Before the redevelopment, we’ll ask if you’re interested in having a small front-yard garden installed.
